A PALE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE ALMS BOWL
18TH CENTURY

清十八世紀 青白玉雲龍海水紋缽

The bowl is carved to the exterior with a writhing dragon and several chilong amongst scrolling clouds
above a band of waves encircling the foot. The stone is of a pale mottled tone with some streaky
russet inclusions.

PROVENANCE:

From an important private Asian collection.

It has been noted that the emperor Qianlong became fascinated with this type of Buddhist bowl after
having seen such a vessel when he visited a temple in Jiannan during one of his “Southern Grand
Tours” in 1758, and subsequently requested similar bowls to be carved of jade (see The Life of Emperor
Qianlong, Hong Kong, 1995, p. 146).

A similar jade alms bowl was sold in Christies Hong Kong, 28 November 2012, lot 2127.

Also another smaller alms bowl was sold in Christies London, 8 November 2011, lot 194.
