A RARE MOTTLED CELADON JADE MODEL OF A LION
MING DYNASTY (1368-1644) OR EARLIER

The recumbent animal is carved with the very angular and square head turned to one side with its mouth
open revealing the teeth and tongue. Its tail is curled up towards the head and the front paws are together
to the fore. The stone is of an attractive cream celadon tone with some lighter and caramel inclusions.

From a private collection amassed in the 1980s.
Compare the current lot to a carving of a tiger in the Victoria & Albert Museum, which is dated to the
Song period which has a similar fat base, strong features and details such as the upturned tail and paws
and is also of an unusually large size for an animal. (see Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, An Exhibition
Organised by The Arts Council of Great Britain and The Oriental Ceramic Society, London, 1975, p. 83,
no. 254).
