WANAGAN
Paddling on the Creek Bed between Gulsvig
Landing and Wanagan is a constantly chang-
ing environment. In Spring and Summer the
vegetation having greened up and gown up,
it is normal for canoes and kayaks to only
see a couple hundred yards or less. The river
in this section often changes depending on
water flow. Rainy season can restore a rather
shallow creek to a full river in a matter of
only a few storms this far north. But the shal-
low gravel bars are common. Everyone at
some point in time gets to “walk on” the
Mississippi River.
My original plans had been to go even slow-
er thru this section than I actually did. I
wanted to investigate references and rivers.
It soon became evident that I also had my
own version of “River Fever” where I felt as
if I needed to get to a certain destination.
Most canoe/kayakers make plans and choice
of how fast based on necessity, time con-
straints and eventually they get “River Fe-
ver” and speed up. It was common to set
goals in life, more so in nature to hurry then
GULSVIG LANDING slow down.
