Evacuation – Fire Drill
What is an Evacuation?
An evacuation might be defined as the orderly removal of all persons from a specified
area. The area could be a building, a room, or a park. The reason for evacuation is
always the same. It is to save the lives of the persons in the area. The cause for
evacuation could include fire, earthquake, flood, tornado or even toxic fumes.
The decision to evacuate is made after careful consideration of the circumstances of the
event unfolding and its possible impact on our contract consultants in the affected area.
The key to a successful evacuation is the willingness of those involved to remain calm,
follow direction, and help their co-workers. For information or assistance on
evacuations, contact the Corporate Security Administrative Coordinator.
What should I do during an evacuation?
Keep evacuation routes clear of blockage at all times. Make it part of your daily
work activity.
Secure all files and confidential material.
Turn off all office machines and equipment as you leave.
Bring with you your car keys, wallet, purse, or medications.
Remain calm and quiet so that you can hear directions during the evacuation.
Take any evacuation seriously. You might be helping to save someone's life
including your own.
Use stairwell exits only. Do not use the elevators. In stairwells, stay to the right
and form single file lines. Use hand rails when in enclosed stairwells. Watch for
Fire Department personnel coming up stairwells to handle the emergency.
