P. 63
This is the message of 10,000 instructors. They keep us focused
on ourselves, and living by rules. It digs us a deep grave, even
before we actually die.
We tremble knowing, “There is a “certain fearful, terrifying
expectation of judgment and fiery indignation” (Heb 10:27). We
know, no matter how good we are, we could have done better.
We could have done more. We could have tried harder. We
could have lived by God’s law better.
In reality there is no movie projector or accusations because
Jesus says, “Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father”
(John 5:45). He stands there with his arm around us to comfort
our fears. These are the fears born in living a life of rules.
But I wanted to paint the worst picture for you possible: things
that many Christians vividly wrongly imagine in their minds.
This is a picture born in non-gospel theology: in a life of RULES.
As good or bad as you see all of this,
any lawyer will tell you
this is a wonderful, beautiful picture,
when it is viewed legally.
Even with all the bad, you’ve got
the best defense attorney in the world: Jesus.
And he will not and cannot lose his case.
