(a) The process of looking into the mirror is described.
(b) Being true to life, one looking in a mirror carefully examines himself in his
natural state, being careful to examine that which needs attention.
d. For he beholdeth (closely considers) himself, and goeth (departs) his way, and
straightway (immediately) forgetteth (fails to recall) what manner (kind) of man
he was.
(1) This signifies that being just a hearer is a worthless pursuit.
(a) Like the man looking in the mirror, there is examination.
(b) Like the man looking in the mirror, there is departure.
(c) Like the man looking in the mirror, there is a failure to recall.
(d) Like the man looking in the mirror, there is no lasting change.
(2) This signifies that being just a hearer is significantly different than being a
hearer and a doer.
(a) This is the reason for the metaphor, as indicated by the use of the
conjunction for.
(b) The comparison is made clear by the use of the conjunction but in the
next phrase.
e. But whoso looketh (investigates) into the perfect (truly genuine and moral) law (rule
or standard) of liberty (that which is free or freeing), and continueth (continues in
activity) therein, he being not a forgetful (one who fails to recall) hearer, but a doer of
the work,
(1) This signifies that a doer will be a hearer of God’s truth.
(a) This person is described as one who investigates.
(b) The end result of investigation is understanding.
(2) This signifies that a doer will act upon his understanding of God’s truth.
(a) This person is not quick to forget what was discovered.
(b) His activity is tied to his understanding of the Word.
f. this man shall be blessed (find joy) in his deed (that which is carried out or done).
(1) This signifies that the doer will be happy.
(a) The basic meaning of the term blessed is to enjoy favorable
circumstances.
(b) When circumstances are favorable a person is more inclined to be joyous.
(2) This signifies that the doer will be fulfilled.
