Marine Cleanup Continues
to be Industry Priority
On February 27, 2018, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) released
an updated training video highlighting trash and debris removal. The video encourages safe
and responsible removal of ocean trash and debris, and is part of BSEE's Marine Trash and
Debris Program. The program encourages best practices including sending marine trash to
shore, safely securing debris and trash, and training personnel in safe trash disposal.
BSEE's requirements for the Marine Trash and Debris Program can be found in Notice to
Lessees 2015-G03. For more information about the program, visit the BSEE website HERE.
Marine debris and clean up has long been a priority for the G&G industry, and is reflected in
programs, like the IAGC's Debris and Ghost Net Initiative. The IAGC Ghost Net Initiative is
simple. Seismic crews are asked to take some pictures when encountering entangled wildlife
or delivering fishing net to the dock at the end of a rotation at sea, and then remember to
pass it along to us for inclusion in our growing archive of data. In return, we promise an
annual report that will encompass the magnitude of good done by environmental stewards in
the geophysical industry.
As we are approaching year two of the Ghost Net Initiative, the IAGC is taking more steps to
proactively show our effort in environmental responsibility. This year in the IAGC's annual
HSSE Statistics Report, we will be including Ghost Net Initiative statistics to show the
tremendous effort our members have put forth. We encourage all of you to participate in
showing off the positive actions you are all taking.
In Memorial: Mr. L. Decker Dawson
The geophysical industry has lost a great pioneer. Mr. L. Decker Dawson passed away peacefully at his home on 6 February
2018. He was 97 years old.
Mr. Dawson founded Dawson Geophysical in 1952 in Midland, Texas with just 10 employees. His reputation for being "a
man of his word" led Dawson Geophysical to great successes. As a provider of onshore seismic data acquisition services in
North America, the company emerged as an industry leader. Even after retirement, Mr. Dawson remained loyal to his
passion, ensuring the company had great leadership and stayed true to the values on which the company was founded. Mr.
Dawson had a hand in founding the IAGC as well, which was established in 1971. He actively participated on the Board of
Directors in the '70s and '80s, and served as Chairman from 1980 to 1981.
Our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the Dawson Geophysical staff.
