In Ayurveda, the left nostril is indicative of the moon energy, which in
turn symbolizes peace and has a cooling effect. Hence, for purification of
innumerous Nadis of the body, Nadi Shodhan should begin from the left
nostril.
1) The tip of the middle and ring fingers will remain placed between
the brows and the thumb will alternate between left and right nostril.
2) Press the right nostril with the right thumb such that the inhalation
can take place only through the left nostril and right one is blocked.
3) Now Inhale slowly through the left nostril, till the lungs are
completely filled. Then, immediately close the left nostril with the thumb
and open the right nostril to ‘exhale’ but slowly. Exhale till the lungs are
completely empty.
4) The process of ‘inhale with left nostril and exhale with right’ is “one
cycle”.
5) Then ‘inhale with right nostril and exhale with left’ is the “second
cycle” and so on.
Beginners can do this in sets of 3 with 15 cycles in each set. As days passed
with practice, try to increase the number of cycles to 30 and gradually the
speed too. When you are able to practice for longer duration, inhale with
as much force as possible, then also exhale forcefully in similar way.
