Running a Great Shift Learner Guide
Headset Use
Lesson 8 00:05
Overview
Headsets (radios) can provide massive improvements to the efficiency of a shift. They
allow you to communicate instantly with each zone of the restaurant, which can save
valuable time.
Note that the Vice President or President of Operations, or the Franchise Owner
approves headset purchases for any restaurant.
Headset Use
Headsets are worn every shift, from beginning to end – not just the busy shifts
Hold the “speak” button for 1 second before speaking, otherwise your first word(s) will be cut off
Use appropriate & hospitable language
Speak with courtesy (i.e. “Brad, may I?”)
Avoid excess chatter by only communicating relevant information
Headsets are not a substitute for walking the floor!
We exclusively use 3-channel headsets to reduce the chatter for everyone:
1. The host team communicates on channel 1
2. FOH leaders communicate on channel 2
3. Culinary leaders communicate on channel 3
Everyone can switch channels to speak with someone in a different department. For example, if a FOH manager needs
to ask a culinary leader about an allergy, s/he can temporarily switch to channel 3 to ask the question.
This cures the biggest barrier to headset use: excessive chatter in your ear.
Maintenance and Storage
Headsets are signed out each shift; each unit is numbered and signed out to each applicable leader managers
and team member on each shift using a sign out sheet
Headsets are turned off and returned to charging station at the end of each shift
Headsets are only charged using the designated chargers
The closing FOH manager is ultimately responsible to ensure that every radio and headset is returned safely to its
charger
Have alcoholic wipes on hand to sanitize
