• Density – The density of the material is dependent on the weight of the individual molecules in
the polymer.
• Filler Content – In addition to the base polymer, a filler may be introduced to reinforce the
strength of the material. Fillers in polymers can be long or short strands of a material, such as
carbon fiber or glass fiber. Fillers can also be an additive material, such as talc, colorant or mineral.
Commented [AB5]: Need better picture or drawing.
Possible give bibliography.
Reference to paper for Fiber algorithm.
Commented [AB6]: More data
Fiber algorithm and orientation effect
Maybe include additional information in the packing?
2.3.2 Process Parameters for Filling
For a Level 1 analysis, only the filling process settings are going to impact the simulation.
2.3.2.1 Filling Time
The Filling Time defines the how fast the material fills the cavity. The initial flow rate of the material is
defined as:
( + )
=
This is the flow rate used at the beginning of the fill at the Melt Entrance but is not necessarily the amount
of time which will be output from the simulation. The actual time it takes to fill the molding volume is
dependent on the characterization of the flow over the duration of the calculation, which is more complex
than a simple equation and is what the simulation is meant to be used for.
For a simple filling analysis, the filling time should be set based on the gating layout and the size of the
part. The equation below can be used to define the fill time for the process:
