Chapter 3 Getting Started
Understanding Working Envelopes
Vehicle Length
This is the maximum vehicle length that can be washed while remaining within the working
envelope and the spray arms are still able to butterfly in and out. Limousines can be washed,
however the arms will only be able to butterfly around the front and not the rear of the vehicle.
The Saber® is designed to wash the largest consumer vehicle currently available, which is 21’-
9”; i.e. a 1 ton pickup truck with an extended cab and an 8 foot bed. A Ford Excursion measures
19 feet; a Chevy Suburban and other consumer SUV’s are shorter yet.
Stop Distance
This is measured from the front bumper to the point at which the bumper would break the exit
Photo-Eyes, and when the rear bumper just clears the entrance eyes.
When a vehicle reaches the point in the wash where the entrance eyes once again see each
other after the rear bumper, the Saber® activates a stop light. If the driver does not stop in time
and proceeds beyond the operating envelope, he will break the exit eyes and the Saber will
signal to backup. The longer the stop distance, the less space there will be to backup and the
more vehicles that can be washed per day. Stop distance is 9” for a, 21’ - 9” vehicle, 42” for a
19’ vehicle and 66” for a typical 17’ vehicle. Stop distance is a result of Photo-Eye spacing
(entrance to exit) and exit Photo-Eye position.
Spacing between exit and entrance Photo-Eye’s are typically 274” apart, and the exit Photo-
Eye’s centerline is typically positioned 11” from the head beam as shown below. Photo-Eye
spacing directly effects butterfly clearance entrance.
