Procurement
WORLD U18
Summary of Relevant Initiatives
• Reduced Printed Materials. The LOC adopted a no-print policy, using email as the primary mode of
communication to reduce the need for printed materials. The LOC printed
only 2,000 programs, the rest were sent digitally. 2.2
• Sustainable Food and Beverage Program. A report submitted by the
contracted caterer, Sarova Panafric-Nairobi Hotel, details that organization’s
habitual efforts to conserve water and energy and minimize both
packaging/service ware waste and food waste (extra food and leftovers). 2.3

supported women and youth. 2.4

Recommendations for Continual Improvement
• Procurement Policy. A clear procurement policy prevents confusion about commitments to considering social
and environmental impacts along with price when decision-making power to procure goods and services is
distributed amongst many parties or entities. Create and adopt a relevant policy addressing the key
questions to consider before making purchases. For maximum adoption, work with all staff that purchase
anything for the event to create the policy. 2.1
A procurement policy might include some of the following direction;
• Sample language to include in bid contracts about waste prevention and diversion efforts, including
guidance on acceptable and non-acceptable materials
• Ways to increase outreach to local small business owners with requests for proposals
• To decrease packaging waste that ends up as litter or in a landfill, require that suppliers and vendors
eliminate single-use plastic wrap, and place orders in bulk to avoid individually wrapped items.
• Information about relevant local policies regarding reduction of material waste, such as the ban on
plastic bags that went into effect countrywide in August, 2017.
