Executive Summary
Our company, IDC Research (Thailand) Co.,Ltd, has conducted this market
study on animation, character and game industries for DEPA (Digital Economy
Promotion Agency) this year. DEPA was set up with a mission to promote Thailand’s
digital economy, including the digital contents. DEPA’s intention on this research is
to use the market size information of these three industries to find appropriate
policies to further support the industries in future.
There are four significant adjustments in this 2016 market study, conducted
by IDC. (1) The character industry has been separated out from the animation
industry. (2) the population frame has been adjusted by adding some new players
and cutting some players who were out of business. (3) The criteria for choosing key
players has changed. For animation industry, the companies with at least 20 million
baht revenue according to Department of Business Development (DBD) would be
categorized as key players in the market. For character industry, the companies with
at least 10 million baht revenue according to Department of Business Development
(DBD) would be categorized as key players. And for game industry, the companies
with at least 100 million baht revenue according to Department of Business
Development (DBD) would be categorized as key players. (4) The survey
questionnaires have been revised in order to catch up with changes in the markets,
as per some advice from the Digital Content Association of Thailand (DCAT), the
Thailand Animation & Computer Graphics Association (TACGA), Thai Game Software
Industry Association (TGA), and Bangkok ACM SIGGRAPH Association.
IDC research team conducted the survey by using in-depth interview, phone
interview, and online survey. Table 1 shows the population and sample size in 2016
compared to those in 2015 market study.
