WOMEN
RISE
when… gender-based violence
is eliminated.
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global pandemic that affects one in
three women in their lifetime. Violence against women disproportionately
affects those in lower-income countries, and COVID-19 has exacerbated
the situation.
Together Women Rise funds projects that address GBV prevention,
enforcement, and survivor recovery, as well as trauma recovery for women
impacted by war and conflict.
In 2021, Together Women Rise partnered with Creamos to address the high
rates of intimate partner violence and femicide (the intentional murder of
women because they are women) in Guatemala. With our support,
Creamos implemented a treatment program for women in the
community surrounding the Guatemala City garbage dump, an area
riddled with chronic gender-based violence. Creamos’ therapeutic
and psychoeducational treatment program helps women in
abusive relationships to identify violence in their lives, increase
their emotional and physical safety and their understanding
of women’s rights and Guatemalan laws, and, ultimately,
decrease the incidence of GBV. Financial literacy programs
offer women alternative options of financial independence to
“
support their families.
Almost every one of us used to work in the garbage
dump, or in other dangerous work like the market.
You were always afraid to bring your children there in
case you got robbed, or assaulted, or there was some
sort of accident. It’s completely different here. Our
children are taken care of, and we’re not only earning
an income, but we’re also becoming better people.
