YOUR STUDENT EXPERIENCE
In the fall of academic year 2015‐2016, students were given the opportunity to respond to two
questions:
1. What has your experience been here at VCU?
2. What would you like your experience to be here at VCU?
Students were not prompted in any other way but were encouraged to think broadly about every aspect
of their experience here, including in the classroom, clinics, lab, and socially. Our SCIE Ambassadors also
responded to these questions and their responses follow.

What has your experience been here at VCU?
I have had a positive and supportive experience as a graduate and doctorate student here at VCU. The
classes have been easy to manage around my work schedule.
What would you like your experience to be here at VCU?
I would like to see more programs/resources geared towards the working and part‐time students.
Elena Fernandez
What has your experience been here at VCU?
VCU has given me the opportunity to seek out ways to connect with people outside of my comfort zone.
VCU has given me the opportunity to gain and expand my leadership skills.
What would you like your experience to be here at VCU?
I hope to make network connections for my future career. I hope to be prepared for a successful career
both knowledge and skill based.
Stequita Hankton
What has your experience been here at VCU?
Since I’ve been at VCU, like any other location, I have experienced highs & lows. The highs have been
centered [on] my involvement in the quest for racial equality among health professionals. This has led to
me to get involved in numerous outreach programs within the School of Medicine, as well as inter‐
professional teams. Contrarily, the lows I have experience while at VCU center around exclusion from an
individual perspective, as opposed to the systemic process I discussed in my highs. Ideally improvement
of topics I consider my highs, will lift my lows as well.
