        Mariachis at Matthey

        This article was written by Matthey students
        for the Matthey Magazine. Angelica Ramirez
        and Roselyn Sepulveda, 7th graders, give us an
        insight on the newly offered Mariachi class.

        The roots of the Mariachi go back hundreds of
        years. It was the music of the country people;
        music that celebrated the joys, struggles, and
        triumphs of the Mexican people. The musical
        form and ensemble of the Mariachi developed
        differently from region to region in Mexico. Mark Cantu along with his Mariachi class learning music together.
        The ensemble that is familiar today began to take shape in the 19th century, in the state of Jalisco.
        By the 1950s the Mariachi ensemble was becoming more flexible and orchestral without losing
        its traditional base. The classical guitar, two trumpets, and more violins were added to make the
        ensemble more adaptable to different playing styles. This year at Matthey Middle School we have a
        Mariachi class for the first time ever. The class, taught by Mr. Mark Cantu, will teach our students
        how to play various instruments and sing in Spanish. If you are interested in learning more about
        Mariachi, you can visit our fantastic Mariachi director, Mr. Cantu.
