Figure 2-4: Site Access
2.2.3 With regard to the wider highway network, to the west, the A2 provides
connectivity to the Medway Towns. To the east, it continues to the towns of
Sittingbourne and Faversham via the nearby Key Street Roundabout junction,
which connects with the A249 Trunk Road, providing access to M2 Junction 5 to
the south and Maidstone.
2.2.4 It is evident the site is well located in relation to the primary and strategic route
networks.
2.3 Walking and Cycling Infrastructure
2.3.1 A 1.8-metre-wide footway bounds both the eastern and western sides of the
access spine road, with the western footway terminating within the completed
development site. The eastern footway continues to the northern boundary of the
proposal site. Additionally, as noted above, within the vicinity of the site access,
dropped kerbs have been provided on the existing traffic calming island to allow
for pedestrian crossing movements to take place.
2.3.2 Footways are provided on both sides of the A2 in the site vicinity, measuring
approximately 1.5 metres in width. To the west of the site, some 310 metres from
the existing site access, the southern footway terminates and pedestrians cross to
the northern side of the road to access Newington village centre. The existing
footway provision is maintained to a reasonable standard and is street lit.
2.3.3 In addition to the above, a number of Public Rights of Way (PRoW) are provided
across the wider area, as shown in Figure 2-5 overleaf, befitting the semi-rural
location of the site. Footpath ZR59, to the north of the site access, provides safe
crossing of the railway line to the north, continuing into the surrounding
countryside.
