            53 RACKING SEIZING 53a
The Racking Seizing is used in preference to a
Round Seizing (52) when more load will be placed
on one of the seized parts than the other, such as
when forming an eye in the end of a line. Depending
upon the size of rope being seized, a single run
of Racked Seizing can be put on (as shown here)
or a double run can be used with the turns of the
second layer fitting between those of the first.
With heavy ropes, where cord is used for the
seizing, the turns can be hove taut with a Marline
            Spike Hitch (54).
On most normal sizes of boat ropes a single
                                                                53b
layer of seizing will be sufficient. Begin by securing
the seizing twine or cord to one part of the rope
using a Clove Hitch (41). Weave the seizing on in
a series of figures of eight around the two parts
of the rope (53a) and close them up tight (53b).
Next apply a series of binding turns between the
two rope parts to tighten the whole seizing (53c),
before finishing by tying the two ends of the seizing
together with a Reef Knot (5) as shown in 53d.
Here it has been placed outside for clarity, but
for security it is best placed between the two
            rope parts.
