6. She opened it and saw the child, ðÓñflÓiÔí-³Óêeí¤ÑêÐþÌzÔî ·ìÔzÐõÌzÔî.î
and behold a boy was crying. í¢Ó×ÒaþÔ¼£Ôò-íÑpÌíÐî
She took pity on it, and said, þÓôêÒ–zÔîî− flÖñÖ¼ñÒ¤ôÐìÔzÔî
“This is one of the Hebrew boys.” :íÞÓïó−£ÌþÐë̼ÞÖí−'ÑðÐñÔiÌô
7. [The infant’s] sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, › íÒ¼ÐþÔt-³Ôa-ñÓê ‡B³ÒìÎêþÓôêÒ¤zÔî.ï
“Shall I go and call to you ·CÖñ−̳ê¥ÖþÖšÐîC †ÑñÑêÞÔí
a nursing [mother] from the Hebrew women ³Ò¢iÌþÐë̼ÞÖíö£Ìô³ÓšflÓò−Ñôí¤ÖMÌê
to nurse the child for you?” :ðÓñÞÖiÔí-³ÓêC£Öñš'Ìò−ѳÐî

“And her maidens were walking [going]?” :³B×ÐñBí Öí−Ó³BþμÔòÐî

[Meaning:] her handmaiden. .dÖ³ÖìÐõÌL³Óê
But the Sages explained it as “hand.” ,ðÖ− öBLÐñ ,eLÐþÖð eò−ѳBaÔþÐî
However, according to Hebrew grammar, LÓðÒwÔí öBLÐñ šecКÌð−ÌõÐññÖëÎê
íÖ³ÖôÎê should then have been vocalized ,dÖ³ÖnÔêðÑšÖpÌíÐñBñíÖ−Öí
with a dagesh 17 in the mem. ,íÖLeèÐcó"Óô
They explain íÖ³ÖôÎê³Óê as “her arm,” ,dÖðÖ−³ÓêZdÖ³ÖôÎê³ÓêeLÐþÖcóÑíÐî
and her arm extended many cubits. 18 :íÑaÐþÔí ³BnÔêdÖ³ÖnÔêíÖëÐaÐþÔzÐLÌòÐî

Whom did she see? The child! ,ðÓñÓiÔí-³Óê?íÖ³ÎêÖþ−Ìô³Óê
That is the plain meaning. 19 .B¬eLÐõeíÓï
But, the Midrashic explanation is BLÖþÐðÌôe
that she saw the Divine Presence with him. 20 :íÖò−Ì×ÐLBn̼íÖ³ÎêÖþÓL
And behold a boy was crying. 21 .äÆëÉaøÇòÇð-äÅpÄäÀå
His voice was like that of a [grown] boy. :þÔ¼ÖòÐ× BñBš

This teaches that she handed him around ezÔþ−ÌïÍìÓíÓL
17 The word íôê when referring to a handmaiden is written íÖôÖê (see Bereishis 21,10). When it refers to “hand” it
is written íÖôÎê. Rashi, obviously, had the version printed in our texts: íÖ³ÖôÎê—without a dagesh in the ó"ô. However,
Sefer Hazikaron and others cite early texts that have íÖ³ÖnÔê—with a dagesh in the ó"ô. 18 The Sages explain that
íÖ³ÖôÎê is used instead of íÖðÖ− to indicate the miracle of the hand stretching many ³BôÎê, íÖ³ÖôÎê being a play on the word
íÖôÔê— cubit. 19 ðÓñÓiÔí³ÓêeíÑêÐþÌzÔîìÔzÐõÌzÔî is literally: “And she opened it and saw him, the child.” Rashi explains the plain
meaning thus: “She saw him. Who did she see? She saw the child.” 20 Midrashically, ðÓñÓ−Ôí³Óê means: with the
child. Accordingly ðÓñÓiÔí³ÓêeíÑêÐþÌzÔî means: She saw Him with the child. (Rashi Sotah 12b) 21 But, was he not only
