ASSESSING THE AGE FRIENDLINESS OF
WATERFRONT OPEN SPACES: THE CASE OF
KWUN TONG PROMENADE

RESEARCH BACKGROUND
Waterfront promenades are an important type of public open space and are constantly
developing the idea of age-friendliness to combat the aging population worldwide.
While the Hong Kong 2030+ proposes adopting “age-friendly” planning and design
criteria under the framework of the World Health Organization, it fails to address
essential elements like social networks and pleasant environments. There is a
FENG JIAWEI potential opportunity to consider if those criteria could be shortlisted and leveraged
by Hong Kong to consolidate the development of age-friendly waterfront open spaces.

different criteria contributing to age-friendliness, which shows a necessity to assess
the determinants of developing age-friendly waterfront promenades in Hong Kong.
METHODOLOGY
Questionnaire surveys were administered to the elderly. The study also applies the
OBJECTIVES analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to examine the relative importance of different
criteria and attributes concerning the aspiration of the elderly for active aging.

ABOUT THE INVESTIGATOR
I am a self-motivated undergraduate well trained in estate surveying. I am particularly
interested in real estate valuation. Having gained a fundamental understanding of real
estate market development from my studies, I am committed to developing my market
research, data extraction skills, and data analysis techniques. My FYP supervisor is Sr
