IMPLEMENTATION OF
PROJECT
Objectives 1. To deliver through seminar, the recent findings on approaches to increase bus ridership and bas
passengers’ satisfaction for Kuantan Town.
2. To draft strategies with RapidKuantan Sdn Bhd and Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan for supply, demand
and operators upgrading plans.
3. To promote the strategies with collaboration of the stakeholders to the target groups of passengers.
Methodology 1. Desktop activities: to finalise draft and finalise strategies on dissemination of the knowledge and know
how.
2. Meeting and discussion with the relevant stakeholders such as RapidKuantan Sdn Bhd, Majlis
Perbandaran Kuantan and JKR.
3. Validation of the earlier findings when new data and information are discovered. Inventory of the
prevailing site and service condition.s
4. Drafting plans for upgrading all three factors (supply, demand, and operators)
5. Conducting seminars as to gain feedbacks from all stakeholders.
6. Trial Runs are conducted as to test the effectiveness of each plan.
7. Plans are finalised once proposed plans meets the service criteria.
8. Workshops are conducted as to train RapidKuantan staffs.
9. Roadshows are conducted as to promote the upgrading plans to the market.
Activities Multi –tasking activities with the following basic working environment
Conducted 1. Graduate interns generally were stationed at UMP. They are stationed at the industry if required.
2. Meetings and discussion with the relevant stakeholders on monthly basis.
3. Validation and inventory were conducted together with the industry partners.
4. Plans were drafted together with the industry partners.
5. Seminars were hosted the industry with speakers from UMP.
6. Trial runs were carried out by the industries in the present of UMP study team.
7. Plans were finalised together with the industry partners.
8. Workshops were hosted by the industry as to iron out best implementation of the project tasks.
9. Roadshows were conducted together with the industry partners.
10. Study reports were shared in Malaysia Road Conference.
Output Although the original target group was only Rapid Kuantan, Kuantan Municipal Council came in the
picture asking for advice on how to ease traffic congestion within the town centre with low budget al-

located by the Federal Government through public transportation saving scheme incentive. Therefore, 02
additional project, fourth project objective of promoting a one-way system for Jalan Dato Wong Ah Jang
and Jalan Gambut was included in the project. Thus, project output can be summarised as follows:
1. At least 10 operation officers were exposed to bus route and passengers’ dilemma for Rapid
Kuantan. Additional 100 more bus stops were constructed and bus routes are expanded into prime
residential zones for instance a detour of Jalan Perkampungan and Taman Sungai Isap instead of
just plying along Jalan Kuantan – Gambang (the main route).
2. More than 1,000 primary school students were exposed to the benefit of utilising public
transportation.
3. Stakeholders such as the Kuantan Police Force, Kuantan Public Works Department and Pahang
State Road Transport Department apart from Kuantan Municipal Council as the implementer for
the one-way system work hand-in-hand day and night during the initial stage of the traffic flow
changed to the one-way system. In total more than 100 technical personnel were getting the
hands-on training and exposure on how to handle a one -way system project.
Industry 1. Technical Consultancy Service to Kuantan Municipal Council for implementation of 1-way system
along Jalan Dato Wong Ah Jang and Jalan Gambut.
2. Bus Route Ridership Study for all main bus route served by RapidKuantan Sdn Bhd.
3. Determination for factors for users to choose RapidKuantan along 10 selected main routes.
Public Higher 1. Appointed as traffic consultant by Kuantan Municipal Council for the one-way system project.
Learning Institute 2. Industrial experience for 7 graduate interns.
3. The study team leader in particular and Universiti Malaysia Pahang in general are referred to for
any traffic and transportation issues by Kuantan Municipal Council, Public Works Department, Kuala
Terengganu City Hall and State of Pahang Economic Planning Unit.
4. Universiti Malaysia Pahang through UMP Consultancy and Training Sdn Bhd has been appointed
to conduct study on feasibility of erecting pipe rack to transport liquid and gasses materials from
Kuantan Port to Gebeng Industrial Area by SZY Perunding Sdn Bhd and PKNP.
Human Capital 1. Among the Graduate Interns: 1 had completed his PhD, 4 are in their final year of PhD studies and 2
had completed their masters.
Development 2. Technical officers in Kuantan Municipal Council are becoming more skillful in handling traffic and
transportation issues.
3. Operation officers of RapidKuantan are becoming more user friendly when handling complaints by
passenggers.
