                Skimming

Skimming is referred as gist reading. This will help to know the text at the basic level.
This type of reading is generally followed with a magazine or newspaper wherein the
needed articles will be selected for a deeper read.

                Scanning

Scanning is quickly shuttling the eyes across the sentences to get a simple piece of
information. Scanning needs reader’s concentration and sometimes may be tiring.
Scanning is often used with technical, scientific or professional materials. Example:
               conference guide,

                Intensive Reading

Intensive reading is the process with clear aim. It is a time consuming process when
compared with skimming and scanning. This process helps in longer retention of
               information and knowledge.

Intensive reading includes very close accurate reading to get the details. Example:
book report, insurance claim, a contract etc.

                Extensive reading

Extensive reading is used to obtain a general understanding of the subject. It
includes reading longer texts for pleasure. Examples: Marketing strategy books,
               novel, magazine articles etc.

               d) Writing skills

Writing is intimidating to many people especially those who don’t write on a regular
basis. Effective writing needs careful selection of words that will send an accurate
               message.

Writing can be used to reach many individuals at single time. It is the best way to
convey the technical information as it is precise and explicit. Written communication
is also used as a trail for future reference.

Correct grammar, spelling and punctuation are the key for writing. All written
communications must be checked prior to print or send. Always write in plain English
               at the organisational level.
