If the wind suddenly increases by 10 kt or more within the last 10 minutes, it would
be showing as 16008G18KT.
If it says VRB 05KT, the wind is variable and is blowing at 5 kt. If the wind direction
and speed are both 000, there is no wind.
4. Changing wind direction. If the wind direction within a 10-minute period varies, the
two outer directions are listed, separated by a “v”.
This specification comes right after the wind direction and speed. Here, the wind
varies between 130 and 200 degrees.
5. Meteorological visibility at 2 meters above the ground, specified in meters. Here,
it’s 800 meters. Visibility is given in four digits.
If the visibility is 10 km or more, it is reported as 9999. If visibility is below 1500 m
in a particular direction, it will be reported with one of the eight cardinal directions
(e.g., 1500NW).
If poor visibility is observed in several directions, the operationally most important
direction must be stated.
Low fog or low snow drifts are not included in MET visibility, as they occur below 2
meters. They will be reported under weather (6) as MIFG (low fog) or DRSN (snow
drifts). Remember MET visibility and flight visibility are not the same. Flight visibility
is the visibility from the aircraft and forward in the direction of flight. This can be
poor in backlighting. In AUTO reports NDV which means: Non Directional Visibility.
6. Runway number and Runway Visual Range (RVR). Here, runway 09 with visibility
of 1200 m.
An "u"(for up) indicates that the RVR has improved in the last 10 minutes,
A d (down) means that the visibility has deteriorated.
An n stands for no change, unchanged visibility. The group is only used when
visibility and/or runway visual range is 1500 m. or less.
P1500 means that the RVR is above 1500 m. M0150 means that the RVR is
worse than the worst measurable value, here 150 meters means fog.
7. Weather observed during the observation period. Here, the code consists of a 2, 4
or 6 letter abbreviation, consisting of individual or combined abbreviations of the
phenomena below.
