4.12 Prioritization of messages - order of priority

Not all messages are equally important. An aircraft in an emergency situation

needs the radio frequency more than an aircraft that wants to get information

about the wind at the airport.

That is why a priority order has been made.

The highest priority is given to emergency messages.

The priority order is shown below

1. Distress messages

2. Urgency messages

3. Direction finding

4. Flight Safety messages

5. Meteorological messages

6. Regularity messages

Below are examples of messages that fall under the different priorities:

4.12.1 Distress messages

When a serious and imminent danger that requires immediate assistance

threatens, a distress message is sent.

Only the commander or his deputy can send or have a distress message sent.

You call on the frequency you are on, or if it is not suitable, on the emergency

frequency 121.5 MHz and start with the signal MAYDAY, if possible,

pronounced three times.
