Operational procedures
6.6.4 Fire fighting
Fortunately, most fires do not occur while the aircraft is in the air, but before
the flight starts.
Fire extinguishers are located at refueling stations. They are powder
extinguishers. At EKHG, for example, there are 2 powder extinguishers of 12 kg
each.
When we must put out a fire in rooms where we must be present at the same
time, it is important that we can survive and still carry out our mission.
That is why we use Halon extinguishers in our aircraft. Halon extinguishers
reduce the oxygen content in the air to approx. 12%. We can stay in that for a
shorter time.
Ventilate when the fire is out.
Here is a graphic comparison of
fire type vs. extinguisher type:
And here is a little more specific.
Type Use Advantages Disadvantage
Water Fire in fabric, Cools and extinguishes Sviner og er kun egnet
wood, paper e.g. in case of accidental Til slukning af ild i faste stoffer
smoking
Powder All types of Can do the most Cannot extinguish around corners
fires Everything must be cleaned after
extinguishing
You must be close
Foam Everything Foam extinguisher Lays down Not good for electrical fires
extinguisher except like a blanket
electricity Over the fire and suffocates it
Good throw
CO2 Liquids and Completely clean extinguishing Cannot extinguish fires in solid
extinguisher gases Not electrically conductive materials. Not good outdoors
Cold and must not be used against
people
Halon Closed rooms We can stay in the room Greenhouse gases
Little damage to materials
