Dear Claire thank you for your interest to have a time with EBE Special
Magazine, Lets us start about SightLife. Would you tell us beriefly
about SightLife?
Founded in 1969, SightLife is the only global health organization
working relentlessly to eliminate corneal blindness worldwide by 2040.
Sight restoration has a profound impact on recipients, their families
and communities—no one should have to wait to experience the joy
and possibilities that vision brings. Working with partners in more than
30 countries, SightLife is increasing the number of corneal transplants
performed each year to transform millions of lives around the globe.
As you noted, SightLife is working globally with different Eye Banks,
can you exemplify them?
SightLife currently partners with eye banks and governments around the
world: India, Ethiopia, Nepal, China, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Taiwan and
Mexico. In 2016, SightLife and its partners provided 16,262 transplants
for those in need. This year we hope to partner to provide over 20,000
sight restoring surgeries.
What are the main criteria and concerns that SightLIfe is considering
to work with partner Eye Banks?
We look for key factors in both countries and eye banks we work with to
ensure optimal success:
• A government and legal structure that is open to favorable
regulations for donation
• Surgeon demand for cornea
• Access to the donor population
• A population that is favorable to donation
