Q : How do the CEOs gather information?
                       On Whom do they rely?



                 A : The obvious answer to this is,  ‘from everyone and
                 every source into which they can tap’. Non-executive

                 directors may be major providers of information and

                 advice.


                 Q : How proactive is the information retrieval system?



                 A : Pre-1991 it would appear that the system was reactive

                 rather than proactive. Post 1991 there is a reversal of this
                 situation. David Michels manages by walking about. His

                 communication lines are to all levels of the organisation.

                 He has engendered a culture of  actively pursuing
                 knowledge by asking questions and expecting to receive

                 adequate answers. He  hides nothing.  He is determined

                 that there should be no  ‘black holes’.








                 5 : INDUSTRY AND COMPETITOR ANALYSIS




                 Stakis hotels have seen their ranking diminish from 1st in
                 Scotland in 1988 to 2nd in 1990 and 3rd in 1994. Between

                 1990 and 1994 their number of Scottish bedrooms fell

                 from 1762  to 1452, 17.6% fall.


                 In  the U.K. their number of  bedrooms  were  as follows:
