Natural Disaster and Fire
Restaurants and bars have all the ingredients for a fire to flame out of control. A fire could cause serious injury
or death to our Guests and Team Members, as well as devastate our business, leading to lost revenues and
even permanent closure. But there are steps we can take to prevent fires and minimize risk of injury and
death, as well as damage to our stores.
FIRE PREVENTION
Building sprinkler system and kitchen fire suppression system should be inspected annually by our
approved service companies.
Keep combustibles a minimum of 3 feet away from electrical equipment and avoid using electrical rooms
for storage of combustible materials.
Utilize the FM Global Red Tag Permit
System to supervise any sprinkler valve
closures. Keep used tags for review during
FM Global Inspections.
Utilize FM Global Hot Work Permit System
for any hot work performed. Keep used
forms for review during FM Inspections.
TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE PREPARED IN THE EVENT
OF A FIRE EMERGENCY:
Make sure you know where all of the fire
extinguishers are located in your store and
how to activate the Ansul system.
Ensure all Managers know how to
properly use a fire extinguisher. Refresh
training annually.
Be familiar with sprinkler system main
control valves and any other valves
controlling sprinklers in specific areas.
They should be locked in the open positions and inspected on a weekly basis. Document weekly
inspections. Keep documentation for FM Global inspections.
Conduct semiannual fire drills.
P.A.S.S. is an easy way to remember how to use the fire extinguishers effectively.
Pull the safety pin from the handle. The pin is located at the top of the fire extinguisher. It must be
removed to allow you to discharge the extinguisher. Pulling will also break the tamper seal.
Aim the extinguisher nozzle or hose at the base of the fire. This will remove the source of the fire. Aim
low. Do not touch the plastic discharge horn on CO 2 extinguishers as it gets very cold and may damage
your skin.
