Squeeze the handle slowly to discharge the extinguishing agent.
Sweep side to side at the base of the fire until the fire is extinguished. Watch the area. If the fire re-
ignites, repeat steps 2 through 4.
If fire extinguishers are available for Team Member use, it is Management’s responsibility to educate Team
Members on how to use a fire extinguisher and the hazards associated with fighting small or developing
fires. This education must be refreshed annually and when a new Team Member is hired.
IF THE FIRE IS SMALL AND CONTAINABLE …
The first Team Member to discover the fire will immediately alert the Manager.
Manager quickly assesses the situation and calls 911.
Calmly move Guests and Team Members from the affected area. Refer to the “Evacuating the Store”
section of the Crisis Management Guide for specific steps in the event an evacuation is necessary.
Activate the fire extinguisher using the P.A.S.S. technique in order to contain or terminate the fire while
waiting for the fire department.
Once you initially apply the extinguisher, back away from the fire in case it flames up again.
If it is safe to do so, check to ensure the sprinkler control valve is in the open position.
If the fire becomes uncontrollable, leave the area immediately.
Once the fire department arrives you will receive further instructions. When safe to do so, contact your
ROD/ROM.
The ROD/ROM will contact the Crisis Hotline and the Crisis Team will be notified.
The appropriate Crisis Team Members will provide direction and next steps.
IF THE FIRE IS LARGE OR SPREADING QUICKLY …
Call 911.
Calmly evacuate Guests and Team Members from the building and direct them to a safe distance from the
building. The recommended minimum distance for evacuation is at least 300 feet from a building for a fire.
Refer to the “Evacuating the Store” section of the Crisis Management Guide.
If safe to do so, activate the fire extinguisher using the P.A.S.S. technique. Once you initially apply the
extinguisher, back away from the fire in case it flames up again.
Evacuate immediately if you have the slightest doubt about your ability to fight a fire, if the extinguisher is
empty, or if the fire is spreading quickly. Wait outside with the Team Members and Guests for the fire
department to arrive.
As soon as everyone is safe and accounted for, contact your ROD/ROM.
The ROD/ROM will contact the Crisis Hotline and the Crisis Team will be activated.
