Natural Disaster and Fire

If your store is located in an area that is prone to flooding, you most likely are aware of the conditions
that will put your store, your Guests and your Team Members at risk. Just like other natural disasters,
there are steps you can take prior to a flood in order to minimize the damage and ensure the safety of
            everyone in the store.

There are two types of flooding that can occur: flash flooding and flooding. Flash flooding occurs when a
large amount of water rushes down a creek bed or bayou, creating a dangerous fast-moving rush of
water. Other floods happen over time and occur when heavy rain fills channels, lakes and creeks slowly.

Understanding Flood Watch and Warning Terms
Flash Flood Watch During heavy rain, flash flooding can develop quickly

Flash Flood Warning Flash flooding is imminent and occurring
Flood Watch Significant rainfall has occurred and may cause flooding

Flood Warning Regional or specific area flooding is imminent or occurring

If your store is in a flood-prone area, you should consider preparing by doing the following:

 Elevating the furnace, water heater and electrical panel.
 Elevating games off the floor using pallets or 2x4s.
 Elevating items that are stored on the floor, especially items of high value such as electronics.
 Installing “check valves” in sewer traps to prevent floodwater from backing up into the drains of your
PREPARATION  Constructing barriers (levees, beams, floodwalls) to stop floodwater from entering.
                      store.

 Prepare emergency supplies. Consider items such as:
                      
                         Portable radios, cellular phones
                       Batteries (C, D, 9V, 6V)
                       Bottled water
                       Duct tape
                       Plastic sheets (heavy gauge)
 Rope, tarpaulins, power and manual tools

                       Plywood, 2x4 studs, nails

            WHEN FLOODING IS FORECAST

 Listen to your local news reports if flooding is forecast to know if and when to instruct Team Members
               to leave the building.

 Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to
higher ground. Do not wait for instructions to move.

 Be aware of streams, drainage channels, canyons and other areas known to flood suddenly. Flash
floods can occur in these areas without much warning.
