3 MONTHS BEFORE HURRICANE SEASON
Prior to the start of the hurricane season, Facilities will provide direction on specific steps that each store
must take. Hurricane season officially begins June 1 through December 1.
Steps may include the following:
If the store has hurricane shutters, Management should retrieve them from storage and place inside the
store in case they are needed.
Identify vendors that will secure boarding materials.
Arrange to have strapping or anchoring done to the roof structure; e.g., the joists, all roof-mounted
equipment such as HVAC units and exhaust fans.
Contact HVAC repair company to make sure all rooftop equipment has secure panels.
Inspect and repair roof coverings and edges before hurricane season.
Review the emergency supply list to ensure everything is purchased, including the following:
Flashlights Bottled water
Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, 6V) Duct tape
Purchase several disposable cameras Plastic sheets (heavy gauge)
to have on hand to record damage Rope, tarpaulins, power and manual
Assess landscaping to determine if tools
trees need to be trimmed Plywood, 2x4 studs, nails
Portable radios, cell phones
WHEN A WATCH IS ISSUED
Monitor and Plan
All Managers should report to the store to assist in pre-storm preparations.
Continue to monitor local TV and radio stations for instructions and up-to-date information.
GM to prepare an action plan for reopening. Provide to ROD/ROM.
Prepare Building
Schedule board-up or shutter install. Do not block emergency exits.
Remove any debris from the roof.
Determine water and gas main shutoffs to building. A local facilities contractor will help with this while
they are on-site to board up the building.
Anchor, secure, dispose of or relocate anything in the yard that could potentially cause injury or building
damage when the wind arrives.
Anchor portable buildings; e.g., sheds, trailers, storage racks, etc.
Properly rig outdoor signs with wires secured to anchors and turn off power.
Check dumpsters to determine if they are full and need to be picked up prior to the storm.
Close lids and secure gate to trash area.
If trash area is the landlord’s responsibility, contact the landlord to make sure the trash area is secured.
Check cooking oil bin.
Check back door areas and look for potential hazards.
Remove outside flag, if possible.
Protect and relocate vital records if necessary. Instruct Team Members to remove all loose files from
