Y4 Autumn Term. Part 1 CW Lesson 4
ADJECTIVES 3
Truth to Teach (Source)
When comparing the description of two nouns a comparative adjective can be
used.
When comparing the description of more than two nouns a superlative
adjective can be used.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Show the children a display of objects which can easily be compared with each
other in size, colour, etc. Examples would be bricks, tools, chocolate bars.
3. Explain that there are adjectives called comparative adjectives and
superlative adjectives. By using the display of objects describe them using
these kinds of adjectives.
4. Have a table drawn on the board with three columns: -
Root adjective Comparative adjective Superlative adjective
short shorter shortest
red redder reddest
sharp sharper sharpest
cream creamier creamiest
Give lots of examples so that the children understand how these adjectives are
used. Let the children put them into sentences.
5. Talk about the many adjectives which end in ‘ful’ and ‘less’. Let the children
suggest some of the ‘ful’ and ‘less’ words to describe Jesus, e.g. faithful,
merciful, prayerful, careful, watchful, selfless, sinless, homeless.
6. Let the children try the worksheet to consolidate their learning.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will be familiar with comparative and superlative adjectives.
2. They will be more equipped to use adjectives in their written work.
