THE ADMINISTRATOR | 209
“Thanks. Please, sit, Alonzo.” He turns to Mrs. McDaniel, “the hydraulic
levelers and rubber radiator hoses need to be replaced.”
“Oh, mine ...” meekly sips her ice tea. “... It's always one thing or another.”
“Delivery will be tomorrow's noon.” He continues. “it shouldn't take any more
than an hour to put them together.”
In its thirty-six years -- the timeless 1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow --
received a new air conditioner in 2011. In the last four years, the radiator has been
flushed; high-pressure brake line hoses replaced; and tomorrow, the hydraulic
levelers and rubber radiator hoses are scheduled for replacement. Not too shabby
for a piece of machinery.
“It is good to know, Enrique. Thank you.”
“You're welcome, Mrs. McDaniel.”
With the pleasantries and a summary report of the status of the 1979 Rolls-
Royce out of the way, the foursome settles down and digs into the appetizing meal
prepared by Mrs. Velez. The main course is Asado Negro which is a slow-roasted beef
with a sweet glaze of wine that's cut with a little vinegar, peppers, and spices. The
dish is served up with Tajadas (fried plantains) and brown rice, and Sopa de
Mondongo is a soup made from diced tripe (the stomach of a cow) and slow-cooked
with bell peppers, onions, and carrots.
