You will most likely be told this is rare opportunity that you “don’t 25
want to miss” and be encouraged to get into a market early while
there’s still big money to be made and you need to hurry as the offer
does not last long. Most companies selling investments in the UK are
authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority by law but Boiler-rooms,
are not, so there is no chance of getting your money back..
Vishing is where fraudsters will telephone you and persuade you
to hand over personal details or transfer money during a call that will
come out of the blue DON’T DO IT no matter how honest they sound
The criminals already have your name, address, phone number, bank
details – essentially the kind of information you would expect a gen-
uine caller to have which makes you trust them. If you get this kind of
call, simply hang up, and ring the number on the back of your credit
card using a different phone from the one they called you on.
How to deal with nuisance callers.
The one that catches out many older people is a Pension libera-
tion scam based on the new rules about how you use your pension funds. Scammers are bom-
barding people aged 55 and over offering them investment opportunities to get hold of their
pensions savings.
