IRELAND FINISH OFF WITH THE FOURS
IRELAND FINISH OFF WITH THE FOURS
Ireland started off with a difficult match against Wales but Ireland’s D J Wilson, Jal Richardson,
Martin Trainor & Mark McCullough got home 11 - 7 in a low scoring game. Keith Hawkins, Elise
Daniell, Barry Keirle & Nicky Bartlett got England off to a flying start with a 25 - 4 over Scotland.
However, in their second game they lost 14 - 9 to Wales. Ireland kept on their winning way with a
25 - 2 win over Scotland. the third and final round saw Ireland and England in a very tight struggle
but the Irish edged home 10 - 8 to give themselves a clean sweep of the points and condemn
England to third place. Wales ensured their second place with an 18 - 4 win over Scotland.
Ed - I was unable to attend the championships, the first time ever since 1986. My sincere thanks
are due to Scotland’s President Bob Barr who supplied all the scorecards, result sheets and pro-
grammes. Some of the scorecards were complete rubbish and my sympathy goes to Bob who
had a very difficult task in getting the scores correct.
It would seem to me that some players need lessons on how to mark a scorecard, astonishing
at this level. For this reason I had to ignore the scorecards and what happened end by end and
just concentrated on the final result of each game.
As to the photographs, as I was not present I had to rely on others and these were either
non-existant or too small to use etc. etc. but I shall be at the World Championships and hope to
take my own as usual.
Mid Ulster Nationals
Mid Ulster Nationals
Mid Ulster completed their section of the IIBA nationals. Qualifying sections had taken place on
4 nights before Christmas and 4 after. As has unfortunately has been the case in recent times it
has become increasingly difficult to ensure sufficient ladies entries something which will have to
be addressed at Exec level sooner rather than later.
In the rinks Cookstown Parochial's rink of Damian McElroy, Aaron Ward, Johnnie Donnell
and Seamus McGillion did not have an easy passage. having disposed of Colm McHugh in the
final qualifier they were expected to have a comfortable passage to shaws bridge but he was taken
to the last end by Maghera's Robin Clark, Shiela Anderson, Robert Paul and Robert Anderson.
The triples was a similar Situation going to the last bowl with Cookstown High's Tommy
McAleavey, Glen Wilsons and Seamus McGlinchey squeezing out Cookstown Parochial's Damian
McAllister , Anthony Bradley and Ashley Wright
In the pairs Colum and Liam McHugh came back from the death picking up a 3 on the last
end to beat Cookstown High’s Willie Lennox and Glen Wilson, whilst Tamlaght pair Glen Booth
and Damian McCracken pipped Lafarge's Gary Merron and Seamus Kyne picking up 3 on the
penultimate end when Lararge skips running bowl took his sides bowls off the mat.
In the singles it was a poor national championship for Cooktown High's Alan Paul as he lost
his final chance losing out to club mate Tommy MacAleavey. Colum McHugh proved too strong
for club mate Anthony Bradley While Cookstown High's Mark Wilson claimed the 3rd spot.
