The other semi was between Oriel’s Sean Trainor and Western’s veteran Gary Burke. On this occa-
sion, it was the Trainor brothers who came out on top 7 - 5. The final proved to be an excellent one
with most ends determined by only one shot. It was the last end and last bowl which saw the Trainor’s
come out on top 7 - 6 and qualify for world bowls.
Triples Championship
With the rule limiting one entry in the 4
competitions, it is always interesting to
see which of the 4 events winners of
multiple competitions choose to enter.
In the triples and rinks players in most
case forgo entry to remain with the play-
ers who qualified with them.
The triples had a high quality entry
featuring many who had won previous
Champion of Champion competition, na-
tional winners and international players.
In the Quarter Finals, the skips;
Gary McNab 12 K Bradshaw 1
Colum McHugh 8 E Crawford 2
Joe Beattie 9 N Rutledge 7
Stephen McMahon 10 B Murphy 4
Triples Champions The semi-finals featured a
John Murnihan, John & Stephen McMahon
quality field Mid Ulster’s Colum McHugh,
Ireland’s most decorated International,
met Mid Tyrone’s Gary McNabb. It was a very tight and closely fought game with McHugh coming
through 8 - 4. The second semi saw Oriel’s Stephen McMahon meet Armagh’s Joe Beattie a regular
at this stage in many IIBA competitions. Unfortunately the top form from McHugh’s triple which had
been evident in earlier games seemed to desert them. They never really got into the game against
the Oriel triple and finished 11 - 5 down.
Rinks Championship
The rinks had the smallest entry due
to the limited number of rinks compe-
titions but it still had a quality field.
The quarter final skips:

Ed - this report should have been included in the last issue but time did not permit it. Elsewhere in
this issue you will find a report on the World Championships, so you can see if any of these players
reached the top. I am still struggling with my cataracts so I hope the adjustments to the photos sent
by Seamus turned out OK.?
