This was another long but suc-

ONE THOUSAND POUNDS for

Jason McLean and Callum Goodman Wiltshire, Devon, Essex and
Somerset played in this, the 8th running of the John McLean Charity Short Mat Bowls Tourna-
ment, held for the sixth year at Banister Park Indoor BC. It is an event run in support of Wessex
Cancer Trust on or about the anniversary of John’s birthday and over the years around £8000
has been raised by the short mat bowlers. As usual there was a bumper raffle, with additional
fund raisers “chase the joker” and a silent auction for a bowls holiday on the Isle of Wight
The teams entered with
names to challenge the scorer as
usual, who had the monumental
task of getting the scorecards set
up, but they all came with a com-
mon aim to have a good, competi-
tive, but “fun” day in the name of
raising money for the worthy charity.
Many were returning from previous
years.
It should be noted that three
teams dropped out of the event in
the few short hours leading up to it,
but the organiser, Jason, was fortu-
nately able to find subs for these at
short notice – another show of com-

“extras”. Two of these teams ended up contending a final, but which final?
After three games each in the round robin matches, the top 16 teams progressed to the
knockout stages whilst the 16 less successful teams contested the “Plate” competition. There
had been some close matches, but all had been played in a great spirit.
Emerging as winners from their group had been the 3 Bowlskateers led by James Smith
from Devon having won their three games in convincing style with a massive +28 shot difference
overall. This total was only beaten by Southampton Sinners (Jason McLean) with a +30-shot
difference. In third place at this stage was Whats App Boys with +27 shots followed closely by
Falcon (from Essex) on + 25 shots, East Tilbury (from Essex) on +21, and Pettinger Adventurers
(from Southampton), on +17. The latter team led by Jody Bright included a budding new bowler
in the shape of son Ethan aged 8. A very competitive last 16’s round brought some tight bowling
and even tighter measures.
