picking up 5 shots in the final two
ends, Falcon edged past Hook to
book their place in the Quarter Fi-
nals as well, whilst East Tilbury
showed their greater strength de-
feating young Ethan and his Pet-
tinger team.
Southampton Sinners needed
an extra end to secure their place in
the next round. This had seen a re-
play of the previous year’s final over
fellow Southampton Short Mat team
members Morello Boys which had

teers had an equally close match Brenda Crowe, Maggie Smith & Emma Trott
against Hedge Enders winning 7-5. Another Southampton SMBC team I wish Smithy was Better
took Lloyds Bankers (Pirrie Park) to the cleaners 13-2, whilst Dorset Knobs edged Improbables
9-6. Finally, Dick, Dom & Mum defeated Southern Gooners 8-2.
Whilst everyone in the main competition then took a breather, the contenders in the Plate
competition took to the mats. Good Old Boys only allowed the Golden Girls the luxury of winning
two ends in a 17-2 scoreline. Merriott A (which was a substituted team) beat Philip’s Flops 9-6,
whilst Cabbages (from Westbury Blue Circle Cement – Wiltshire) overturned Incredibowls 8-6.
Cabbages, incidentally, was another “substitute team” and had only agreed to come in on the
Saturday morning. Iford Bridge picked up five shots in the final two ends to beat Meon Valley
9-5 whilst Dinton picked up a 3 on the final end to beat Hurst Bunch (Meon Valley) 7-6. Botley
beat another substitute team (for Merriott B) 10-3, Bursledon Z Reserves beat Golden Oldies 9-
8 whilst Iford Bridge A beat Bursledon
The Quarter-finals of both competitions ran alongside each other and saw Dorset Knobs,
3 Bowlskateers, Southampton Sinners, and I wish Smithy Was Better win through to the semi-
finals in the Main competition whilst Cabbages, Botley, Merriott A and Dinton proceeded to the
semi-finals of the Plate.
Semi-finals time and again both competitions ran side by side. In the Plate, Merriott A to-
tally out thought Botley (although there may also have been the exhaustion factor to consider
by now as well!) collecting a 5, a 6 and a 4 in the first three ends. Cabbages beat Dinton and
the players were ecstatic to have
made it to the final, which was a
round better than they had
achieved the previous year.
Two Southampton Short Mat
Club teams contested the semi-
final matches, but I Wish Smithy
Was Better was definitely not at
the game for this match and lost
13-1 to 3 Bowlskateers without
playing the last two ends.
Southampton Sinners
were also in danger of being
ousted by Poole side Dorset
Knobs until they picked up a
