TRIPLES TOURNAMENT
TRIPLES TOURNAMENT
Stowmarket Town SMBC have only been in existence a year so every credit to them for un-
dertaking such a challenge. This event was staged at Woolpit Village Hall. The photo above
shows three of the four carpets in use. Their objective was a fun day of bowling with: a com-
petition between three Triples teams from each of Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire,
Norfolk and Suffolk; a Target Bowls competition and; raise money for the Alzheimer`s Society,
at Woolpit Village Hall.
The teams were arranged into 3 groups of 5, each group playing all of their games,
against all the teams in their group on the same rink mat – therefore 4 games per team. The
games were played over 9 ends or 40 minutes, whichever was the sooner. There were two
points for a win, one for a draw. The winners were decided by points scored and then shot
difference. If there was still a tie then ends won and tie-break(s) were to be taken into ac-
count.
Group 1 saw Kirton (Suffolk) beat Greenward Park (Herts) who in turn beat Thetford
(Norfolk). Doddington (Cambs.) beat Thetford, Kirton and Greenward Park, but lost to East
Hanningfield (Essex), who won all their games to become Group winner.
In Group 2 Paul’s “B” (Suffolk) won their games against East Harling (Norfolk) and
Letchworth (Herts) but lost to Island “B” (Essex) and Doddington (Cambs.). East Harling
managed a draw against Letchworth but lost the rest of their games. Letchworth also only
managed one draw, losing two games by only one shot. Doddington beat all but Island “B”,
only by one shot on the last end. Island were the group winners.
Kesgrave (Suffolk) in Group 3 won their first game against Shillington (Herts) by two
shots, but unfortunately lost the remaining games. Shillington beat Shropsam (Norfolk) and
Canvey Island Football Club SMBC (Essex) but lost to Sutton St Edmunds (Cambs.). Shrop-
sam (Norfolk) beat Kesgrave and Canvey Island Football Club. Sutton St Edmunds had fairly
comfortable wins in all their games to win the Group. Canvey Island Football Club beat
Kesgrave.
The winners overall were East Hanningfield (Peter Fautley, Paul Bax and Steve Killington)
with 8 match points and a shot difference of 25 and 23 ends won,
Runners Up were Sutton St Edmunds (Janet and Gerry Russell and David Warriner)
with 8 points and a shot difference of 21 and in third place were Island “B” (Peggy May (Fal-
con SMBC), Christine and Paul Reed (Island SMBC)) with 8 points, a shot difference of 16
and 20 ends won.
