COUNTY TRIPLES
A snowy weekend saw the Bedfordshire
County Carpet Bowls Triples and Fours
taking place at Barton le Clay. The
Triples was held on the Saturday, with
24 teams were split into 4 groups with
only the group winners progressing into
the Semi-Finals.
In Group A at the half way point
Neil Rixon (Barton), T Meredith (Clophill)
and M Walker (Colmworth) all had 4
Triples Winners Turvey points from 3 games so it was who could
Jenny Skoines, Andrew Hatton & Paul Curran get 2 more wins that would progress.
The Meredith team beat the Rixon triple who then beat the Walker team to leave the
Meredith trio to take the group on 8 points.
In Group B, P Baynes (Cople) and M Rogers (Turvey) were on 5 points after 3 games
being chased by G Buttrum (Cotton End). The Baynes trio faded losing their final 2 games,
the Rogers drew one and won one to put them on 8 points but the Buttrum trio produced 2
wins to end up on 8 points as well. The count up saw the Rogers Triple into semi-finals on
shot difference.
In Group C, S Macdonald (Cotton End) had 3 wins after 3 games but the others were all
beating each other and a draw then a final win saw the Macdonald trio home with 9 points. In
Group D two teams were in with a shout, G Savage (Clophill) and A Hatton (Turvey). It was
decided, though, by the game they played
against each other as the Hatton trio won
it and had 10 points to go through.
In the Semi-Finals, T Meredith of
Clophill faced M Rogers from the Turvey
Club. The Clophill trio took the first 2 ends
to lead 2-0 but then lost 5 on the third to
trail 2-5 another single saw Turvey 2-6 up
but Clophill fought back with 2 singles to
go into last end trailing 4-6.
The last end saw a good lead from
Clophill and the pressure told as a couple
of wayward Turvey woods saw Clophill Triples Finalists Clophill
take 3 shots and the match.
In the other semi-final, S Macdonald of Cotton End played A Hatton of Turvey. Turvey
shot out of the blocks here and were 10-0 up after 3 ends. A single to Cotton End on fourth
end made it 10-1 but two more singles to Turvey saw the game up after 6 ends 12-1.
In the Final, the Turvey team of Jenny Skoines, Paul Hurren, Andrew Hatton on the first
end the Clophill team of Sue Meredith, Sheila Hall, Tony Meredith, were a little wayward re-
sulting in the Turvey Skip Andrew Hatton bowling close with his last wood to lead 2-0. End 2
- Turvey hold a single as the skips bowl. Tony has a disaster hitting middle twice but Turvey
could only get a single to lead 3-0.
End 3 - A wild end with bowls everywhere but Clophill held 1 and the score is now 3-1.
End 4 - Sue draws in first wood and beats Jenny’s 2, Paul then wriggles a short bowl into
shot. Sheila attempts to move it but it goes the wrong way and Andrew pushes another in for
3 and a 6-1 lead.
