Sweden entered the world championships in Herentals, Belgium 2008 after just two
years of practise. We had great help from Belgium to put our 20 players in motion.
Jonathan Payne from Herentals was a great helper and supporter for us in the begin-
ning. We feel it is payback time to the international short mat bowls family.
Since 5 five years back we have supported some expats from Norway to join the
world Championships and after a couple of years, Norway has taken short mat bowls
to their hearts. Now we have had the first game between these two countries. We played
the world’s format of 2 singles, 2 pairs, 2 triples and 2 fours.
Sweden had so much more experience but all players from Norway tried their best
and really gave us a good game. Norway had a draw in singles but the rest of games
were lost to their neighbours from Sweden.
Norway will participate with 20 players in the next world championships in Eng-
land 2016. This team have once again proved that short mat bowls can be played by
anyone who wants too. Three players played from sitting in a wheelchair and Frode
Kopperud who was born with downs syndrome and also the nearly blind showed that
there is nothing and practically no handicap to stop you from being a good player in
the short mat game.
