14 AVON COUNTY CLOSED FOURS
AVON COUNTY CLOSED FOURS
Fourteen teams took part in the Avon Closed Fours. In the final,
the Wellsway team of Martin Walter, Vincent O’Dornihan Lindsey
& Clive Phillips almost had the game in the bag, Leading by
three shots with just one bowl to play they seemed to have one
hand on the Trophy.
However, the Warmley team of Jan Britton, John Small-
combe, Brenda Knowles & Joan Westlake, who looked like being
runners-up but skip John Smallcombe had other ideas and to
the amazement of all he scored the four shots that gave his team
an astonishing single shot victory.

Twenty five teams entered the competition and were formatted into 5 groups of 5 teams,
with each team playing four games. The winners of each group along with the best three
runners-up progressed to the quarter finals.
Winterborne made their way to the final with a 9 - 5 win over Wellsway 4 in the quar-
ter finals and a 12 - 5 win in the semi-finals. Saltford 1 also made their way to the finals
by a 7 - 5 win over Warmley 1 in the quarter finals and an 8 - 2 win over Pucklechurch in
the semi-finals.
In the final Saltford made a great start winning the first three ends but Winterbourne
fought back strongly but needed a four on the last end to draw level and force a deciding
end. But it wasn’t to be! A brilliant effort by Winterbourne’s Barry Banwell resulted in
scoring three shots and it was a case of so near so far leaving a great win to Saltford 1.
