This is a very exciting time in your career. As you transition into your new role, I offer
some advice for how you can maximize your career opportunities and strengthen
your leadership:
• Be a lifetime learner: Think of learning in the broadest way possible. Ask
questions of the operators, mechanics, welders, engineers, specialists and
technicians, and learn from their experience and craftsmanship. Advance your
formal education and take advantage of the company’s tuition reimbursement
program. When the time is right, take the PTI classes, gas certification class,
and some of the many leadership, management and technical classes offered
at TLC.
• Be involved. Come to work on off-shifts when there are major evolutions, such
as a generating plant startup, a crane lift of a power transformer, or the cut-in of
a gas or steam main. Attend the Strategic Issues and Technically Speaking
seminars. Continue to volunteer and give back to the communities we serve.
• Be innovative. Find out how we have done things, and understand why, and
then challenge the status quo. Is there a better way to do this? Is it still
necessary? Can we use new technology? One of the many ways that you bring
value to the company is by helping us to continually improve.
• Be a leader. It’s easy to simply watch, look on, and go with the crowd. Instead,
be one of the few that lead the group, set the tone, and establish the direction.
Volunteer to lead or participate in a new team. Lead by example.
• Be happy. Pursue aspects of our business that you enjoy, and you will naturally
be successful. Resist the trap of thinking that you have to go to a certain
department to complete your resume or to have a certain title. Let your passion
be your guide.
If you accept nothing but the best from yourself, you will always stand proud.
Stay safe and be well.
