SAPPO vs Lits
The meeting confirmed that SAPPO supports traceability in the industry
provided that it is specie specific. SAPPO follows the Lifestock
Identification Act by way of a registered earmark. No pigs may enter an
abattoir unless they have been tattooed.
The industry does not want to use agencies to manage traceability. It
must be an industry function. Any negotiations around traceability will
be conducted from the industry’s perspective.
The Lits system entails an eartag that can be cut off to make it
untraceable. David Osborne confirmed that the cattle industry wanted
to go forward with the Lits tags.
Decision
The members confirmed that SAPPO will remain with the branding
provision of the Lifestock Identifcation Act (tatoo system). The Executive
Committee was given a mandate to oppose the Lits system for the pig
industry. EB 02/2020-25/02/2020

At the next IPAG meeting a discussion will take place on how to access
