8.6 Business Development
Kgadi Senyatsi was elected as chair of the Business Development
Committee after the former chair, Thami Zimu, resigned due to health
reasons.
The meeting noted that 80 mentorships were currently in place.
The BDM App will be used for risk mitigation, statistics and management.
The Monyetla Investment Fund was sourcing funds for the developing
projects, five of which were in the pipeline. It was hoped that it would
be implemented in the long run.
Joseph Baynes Estate (JBE) and sappo are members of the BTA board
with both electing 2 directors. From SAPPO’s side, Johann Kotzé and
Stephen Butt are directors and Kgadi Senyatsi was co-opted to the
directors’ meeting. Myles van Deventer and Darrol Hopkins serve as
directors from JBE’s side.
The training facility consists of a 100-sow unit. From a management
perspective sappo accepted responsibility for the training side and
Joseph Baynes Estate (JBE) for the piggery.
The aim for the BTA was to have R1 million in reserve at the end of the
2019 financial year. The BTA succeeded in having R1 million in working
capital in reserve at the end of 2019.
There has been an 18% growth in students attending the courses at BTA.
Government officials were trained in an attempt to assist them and make
them more qualified to assist farmers.
Monyetla aims to raise some of the 80 mentees to a higher level. The
pork industry’s focus is on its own people. Individuals must be helped to
reach a higher level. Data production figures must be available and
SAPPO will assist with book-keeping and record-keeping. Monyetla will
also assist with projects such as the Exxaro project as they too provide
some financial support. Monyetla needs money from individual
companies.
James Jenkinson was of the opinion that the relationship with Baynesfield
Estate was very good and to the industry’s benefit. He expressed the
members appreciation for the work done by the management of
Baynesfield Estate, Myles van Deventer and Gert Baum.
