One more unit, a 500 sow unit, was registered during February bringing our
total sow units to 57, the total number of units remains 104 because a weaner
and grower site were merged into a single compartment (farmer had recently
redone the fence line and access control).
Disease Surveillance
We are in process of rolling out the passive surveillance APP to veterinarians.
Encouragingly it seems now that we will also be able to add data
accumulated via the BDM APP to our disease surveillance reporting.
Welfare Working Committee
The Humane Society International had a meeting with the CEO to discuss
progress in moving to loose-housing for sows. They have sent a letter in which
they want to understand how SAPPO will encourage our members who are
not fully out of crates to alter their housing, plus they are wanting SAPPO to
put a timeline to the change. They accept the phased approach to 8-week
system by 2020, they thus expect a similar second phase timeline to no crates
during 16-week gestation.
Compensation
Nothing to report.
Animal Identification Registration and Traceability (AIRT)
SAPPO has engaged with Traceability solutions to investigate and develop
systems to enhance traceability from farm to abattoir and through the value
chain. Part of the brief we have given them is to find practical ways of making
it easier for farms to identify batches of pigs going to abattoir which can be
captured digitally, paving the way for farmers to have accurate slaughter
data for analytical purposes.
The tattooing of all pigs is a non-negotiable as is not requiring individual
identification of pigs destined for abattoirs.
Pork360
Pork 360 accreditation of farms is completed.
Pork 360 review meeting was held at end of February 2020 . There were no
significant changes proposed for the standards. Most of the discussions were
around clarity of interpretation, editing documentation to improve clarity and
acceptable levels of antibiotic contamination in feed (i.e. very low levels
which pose no health issues).
