Notifiable (Exotic) Diseases
FMD
FMD was reported on several cattle properties outside of the containment
zone late last year (11 in total). The back-tracing indicated that the outbreak
could be linked to cattle illegally moved out of the containment zone and
trade through auctions.
More than 85% of the sites identified through backward and forward tracing
exercise have been visited and no more new sites have been identified.
ASF
No new cases of ASF have been reported or rumoured since the cases last
year in Secunda, Balfour and Standerton areas of Mpumalanga. In the
meantime SAPPO will continue to motivate our members to become
compartmentalised, and liaise with State vet services.
CSF & PRRS
No new cases have been reported.
Raw Pork Imports from PRRS Positive Countries
No developments or changes since last meeting.
Pork Exports
SAPPO visited China as guests of Standard Bank to the CIIE in Shanghai.
Although we were unable to meet with Chinese vet authorities we had fruitful
meeting with SA Agricultural attaché to China.
We were informed that Pork is next commodity in line to be reviewed by the
Chinese. We asked the Attaché to please keep us updated of any
developments and communicate as soon as possible if any further
documentation was required.
Live Pig Imports
The Pig Breeders agreed during their AGM in September to put imports of live
pigs on hold for the meantime.
