OUTSTANDING HEART SURGICAL PROCEDURE
“Dacron Gra Enforced Modified Ross Procedure”
Team of Cardiac Surgeons lead
by Dr Praveen Tambrallimath achieved
yet another milestone in the history of
KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital,
Belagavi by successfully performing a
rare heart surgery known as “Dacron
Gra Enforced Modified Ross
Procedure” on the 10 year child. The
child had a congenital and cri cal heart
condi on. The ten-year boy from a
village of Gokak taluka reported to the
hospital with chief complaints of
breathlessness, fa gue, repeated
cough, cold & fever for two years. The
inves ga ons revealed the child is
suffering from a complex heart defect in which Aor c valve was leaking, and the heart enlarged. The child required the most
advanced cardiac surgery.
The high risk the surgical procedure involved the replacement of the diseased aor c valve by “Dacron Gra Enforced
Modified Ross Surgery”. In this surgical interven on, the diseased aor c valve removed from the heart and pa ents owns
pulmonary valve of the child was surgically cut from its place and reconstructed with Dacron gra and placed in aor c valve
posi on. Simultaneously in place of Pulmonary Valve, the Dacron gra was used to create neo-pulmonary valve by Surgeon
in the opera on theatre and structured like pulmonary valve and posi oned at its place. The significant advantage of this
advanced procedure is valve grows as the child grows. The child will lead a healthy life, which includes playing and a full range
of physical ac vi es. Tradi onally, it has been a prac ce to replace the diseased valve with an ar ficial mechanical valve
which does not suit children and need lifelong blood-thinning medica ons like Warfarin / Acetone. These medica ons have
their complica ons and side effects on growing children like bleeding in the brain and other parts of the body and valve
ge ng blocked. The “Dacron gra enforced modified Ross procedure” demands a very high level of surgical skills, state-of-
the-art opera onal infrastructure and exper se.
The child withstood 6 hour-long surgery. This advanced procedure is first of its kind performed in the country. The
child discharged from hospital. Dr Praveen Tambrallimath ably assisted by Dr Nikunj Vyas and Cardiac Anesthe st Dr
Sharangouda Pa l, Dr Abhijeet Shitole. Post-surgically, the child, was managed by Paediatric Cardiologist Dr Veeresh Manvi
& Paediatric Intensivist Dr Nidhi Manvi Goel.
Dr Prabhakar Kore, MP, Chairman of the KLE Society, Dr M V Jali, Medical Director & CEO of the hospital
congratulated the team of surgeons for successfully performing the most advanced procedure and saving the life of a child.
Parents have thanked the team of doctors for the excellent care and compassion — the surgical procedure covered under the
Employees State Insurance Scheme (ESI).
