BIG FAT CULTURAL WEDDINGS
BFCW AFFECTED BY LOCKDOWN
Over the 18 month lockdown, many African, Car-
ibbean, Pakistani and Indian weddings have been
postponed, if not cancelled due to the
closure of many businesses.
For communities used to a big fat wedding, it
could have presented a chance to break away
from cultural norms. It is generally contested that
the guest list has been a long-standing problem
for the bride and groom. Many couples say they
prefer a smaller day, but in the past, couldn’t see
an alternative without disappointing guests who
are expecting to see an invitation. This is an issue
shared across these cultures, a BFCW is rarely
attended by less than two hundred people.
African, Pakistani and Indian wedding traditions,
still include multiple days of ceremony and ritual.
Let’s explore!
