pig is paying levy, which creates a responsibility. There is a welfare
guideline and producers should use it. Farms registered on Pork360
will be compliant. If a farm is not adhering to the standard, it will be
deregistered.

Decision:
It was decided not to initiate any changes to the SANS document
on pig welfare. EB 19/2020-15/07/2020

9. GENERAL

9.1 ASF

Due to an ASF outbreak in Heidelberg, GDARD approached SAPPO for
assistance. GDARD indicated that they wanted to cull pigs and
compensate farmers. This was, however, a contradiction as the minister
had previously said no compensation would be payable.

Dr Peter Evans had sent a SMS to all the veterinarians notifying them of
the outbreak. The national government only informed the industry of the
outbreak a week later.

GDARD is prudent in what they do. They went ahead and involved
SAPPO. SAPPO assisted by buying the pigs from the farmers. GDARD will
refund SAPPO to control the disease. It will not happen in another
province.

If necessary, the industry should provoke the national government in an
attempt to get an engagement with the minister.

The Board took note and agreed that SAPPO can go ahead and buy the
infected pigs.
